ONS publishes data on conception rates

Recent data released by the Office for National Statistics has given a breakdown of the conception rate in England and Wales during 2010.

The data shows that

  • In 2010 there were an estimated 909,245 conceptions in England and Wales, compared with 896,466 in 2009, an increase of 1.4%.
  • Conception rates in 2010 increased in all age groups, with the exception of women aged under 20.
  • The under 18 conception rate for 2010 is the lowest since 1969 at 35.5 conceptions per thousand women aged 15–17.
  • The estimated number of conceptions to women aged under 18 also fell to 34,633 in 2010 compared with 38,259 in 2009, a decline of 9.5%.
  • The estimated number of conceptions to girls aged under 16 was 6,674 in 2010, compared with 7,158 in 2009 (a decrease of 6.8%).

The analysis has also found the number of conceptions outside of marriage or civil partnership has grown from 43% of all conceptions in 1990, to 57% in 2010.

Between 2009 and 2010 conception rates increased in all age groups, with the exception of women aged under 20. The largest percentage increase in conception rates occurred among women aged 40 and over, 30–34 and 35–39, rising by 5.2%, 4.9% and 4.5% respectively.

Reasons for an increased number of women aged 40 and over conceiving include increased participation in higher education; delayed marriage and partnership formation; and the desire to establish a career, get on the housing ladder and ensure financial stability before starting a family.
