The Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (Cafcass) has recently released figures on its case work for the month of May.
The figures show that in May 2014, Cafcass received a total of 857 care applications, which is a 13% decrease compared to those received in May 2013. In addition, the figures show that:
- Between April 2013 and March 2014 Cafcass received a total of 10,605 care applications.
- This figure is 5% lower when compared to the same period in the previous financial year, when 11,110 applications were received.
- Demand peaked during a few months. For example, new applications received in the month of April and October 2013 were the highest ever recorded by Cafcass in those individual months.
The figures have also revealed that in May 2014, Cafcass received a total of 2,239 new private law cases. This is a 55% decrease on May 2013 levels.
Cafcass represents children in family court cases, making sure that their voices are heard and that the decisions that are made about them are in their best interests. The types of cases it works with include:
- Adoption (public law)
- Care Orders (public law)
- Emergency Protection Orders (public law)
- Residency and contact following divorce and separation (private law)
