Half of domestic violence victims experience financial abuse

Recently released figures have revealed the high levels of financial, sexual, and emotional abuse that women experience as part of domestic violence.

Domestic violence charity Women’s Aid is highlighting that financial abuse in particular, where a perpetrator denies their partner’s access to money and financial independence, is often not recognised despite it affecting the majority of women experiencing domestic violence.

Financial abuse can result in unmanageable levels of debt and other financial problems for women and limit her ability to flee from a violent relationship.

Women’s Aid is calling on the Government to take financial abuse into account when implementing Universal Credit, by ensuring that where there are children in the family the payment is always to the mother.

The charity is urging banks and other institutions to ensure their staff are aware of this form of abuse and do not approve loans in women’s names without their knowledge and express permission.
