Child maintenance can help address child poverty

Recent research by single parent charity Gingerbread has found that thousands of families could be helped out of poverty if there were a greater number of effective child maintenance agreements in place.

The analysis shows that, of those in receipt, one in five single parent families whose income without child maintenance is below the poverty line, are lifted out of poverty by receiving it.  Low income groups benefit proportionately most from child maintenance, but are least likely to be receiving it.  Fewer than half of all eligible single parent families currently receive child maintenance.

Chief Executive of Gingerbread Fiona Weir said:

“For the least well off single parents, child maintenance accounts for 20% of their total income. It lifts 19% of parents receiving it out of poverty, and significantly narrows the poverty gap for many more. These funds are crucial to pay for food to put on the table, clothes for school and heating in the winter. Gingerbread is calling on the government to rethink its plans to charge for the statutory service, and focus on maximising the number of children receiving maintenance by whatever method works best for the families involved.”
