Children's charity, 4Children, has responded to the Government's equal marriage consultation, supporting the step forward for equality, and asking the government to go further where there is a clear case for doing so.
Anne Longfield OBE, Chief Executive of 4Children, said:
“We at 4Children know that modern families come in all different shapes and sizes. All the indications are that committed couples, whatever their sexual orientation, create the most stable two parent families. LGBT parents, sometimes mindful of trouble in their own early lives, are often the most nurturing parents.
“So we urge the Prime Minister to stick to the course he has laid out, and deliver marriage equality for LGBT families, whatever the pressures he is facing.
“We are pleased to note that none of the doom and gloom pronouncements about the ‘end of marriage’ that were made during the passage of the Civil Partnerships Act have come to pass. The dissolution rate for civil partnerships has been markedly lower than the divorce rate for marriages.”
