Children from single parent families are growing up in poverty as successive governments fail to make work pay and tackle single parent unemployment, reports Gingerbread. The charity has launched a three-year campaign calling on the government to take action to help single parents escape unemployment and working poverty.

Responding to the release of the Social Justice Strategy paper, John Loughton, Head of Public Policy at Relate, said:
The Office for National Statistics has published a bulletin presenting annual statistics on family and household structure in the UK. A family is a married, civil partnered or cohabiting couple with or without children, or a lone parent with at least one child. Children may be dependent or non-dependent. Types of family include married couple families, cohabiting couple families and lone parent families.
Work and Pensions Minister Maria Miller promised a new child maintenance system that was "fairer for children" as she announced proposals to remove the exemption from maintenance liability for some part-time public servants.
Family organisations, including Relate, Netmums and Gingerbread, will receive Government funding to deliver national online and telephone support services.
