Same sex couples in civil partnerships who wish to convert to marriage will be able to do so without a fee for a year from December. Culture Secretary Sajid Javid laid draft regulations before Parliament confirming that the fee for converting from a civil partnership relationship to a marriage relationship will be waived for a limited one year period.
The waiver is for those who were in civil partnerships before same sex marriage was introduced. Heterosexual couples who want to their relationship recognised as a civil partnership rather than a marriage will not be granted permission.
Same sex marriages were introduced in England & Wales in March and expected to begin taking place in Scotland in autumn.
