Facts on fatherhood in America

Recent figures released in America have given an insight into the profile of fathers in America.

According to the data, there were an estimated 70.1 million fathers in America in 2011. Of these, 24.7 million were married with children under the age of 18.

Around 1.7 million fathers were currently single, either because they were divorced (45%), never married (31%), separated (19%) or widowed (5%).

The data from the US Census Bureau revealed that an estimated 176,000 were stay-at-home dads in 2011. These married fathers with children younger than 15 have remained out of the labour force for at least one year primarily so they can care for the family while their wives work outside the home. These fathers cared for upwards of 332,000 children.

Custodial fathers in 2009 were due $3.5 billion in child support, but received only $1.9 billion. In contrast, custodial mothers received $19.5 billion of the $31.7 billion in support that was due. Around 34% of custodial fathers received all child support that was due in 2009, not significantly different from the corresponding percentage (42%) for custodial mothers.

Around 70% of custodial fathers received noncash support, such as gifts or coverage of expenses, on behalf of their children. The corresponding proportion for mothers was 58%.
